Fountain pen Magnifying glass

Available now!

Manufacturer logoSince the 1929 début of its first pen, Pelikan has been making pens of superb quality. The company’s catalog includes a broad selection of pens, from the minimalist modern Epoch to the practical Tradition and Souverän series to spectacular limited editions. User-interchangeable nibs and a reliable piston filler make the Tradition and Souverän models we offer versatile as well as attractive, and a broad range of sizes, colors, and trim levels offers something for everyone. (Please note that these pens must be filled from a bottle. They cannot accept cartridges or a converter.) Special editions such as the Cities and Famous Places series keep the line continually fresh.

Although we normally stock the models shown below, we’re able to obtain any currently available Pelikan pen for you; if what you want isn’t here, please contact us by email. You can see the complete Pelikan line here.

Because Souverän and Tradition pens have interchangeable nibs, some owners find it convenient to purchase extra nibs to fit their pens. We stock Fine, Medium, Broad, and Extra Broad nibs for most of these models. If you have never tried installing or removing a nib, see how easy it is.

All Souverän and Tradition pens feature barrel transparency so that you can see when you are running low on ink. Solid-color and marbled opaque models have a “window” adjacent to the barrel threads (as shown in the color chips on this page), and other models are partially or entirely transparent.

Pens That Write Right!

If the nib’s no good, it doesn’t matter how fancy the rest of the pen is — it’s not a good pen.

Unless otherwise requested at the time of sale, I tune each new pen or nib at no extra charge before shipment. I fill the pen with Waterman Blue-Black ink and write with it on paper from the same fountain pen friendly pads we sell, adjusting as necessary to bring it up to the RichardsPens.com “factory” standard for smoothness and flow. The result is an adjusted nib, not a customized one.

Different inks or different papers can produce different results. Any special adjustment to accommodate your flow preference or a specific ink or paper comes under the heading of customization, and there will be an additional charge for that work.

Looking for a Custom Nib?

Ordering a custom nib is easy — read this pop-up “comic strip” to see just how easy it is! If you order a new pen with a customized nib, I will modify the nib (for an extra charge) and ship the pen immediately instead of putting it into my regular queue.

Majesty Collection

The gleaming Majesty series introduces a new direction for Pelikan. Fashioned of platinum-plated sterling silver, it features gold-plated furniture, a gold-plated diamond-engraved frieze at the cap crown, and an innovative barrel shell that removes to reveal the transparent piston-chamber reservoir. The frieze bears design elements from the stone walls of Pelikan’s original factory in Hanover, Germany. Like all the piston-filling models in Pelikan’s famed Souverän series, Majesty offers the inherent reliability and smooth writing (XF, F, M, or B nib) that go hand in hand with the Pelikan name. Length: 511/32" (more size info here). Click the magnifying glass for a zoomed image of this pen.

M1000 Pens

Big, bold, and smooth! The biggest of the Souverän series, the M1000 is definitely Oversize. But for all its bulk, it’s so remarkably light and comfortable in the hand that you can literally write with it all day. The huge 18K two-tone nib is springier than the nibs of smaller Souveräns, giving you a remarkably easy ride. (Don’t think of it as a flex nib, because it‘s not. But the pleasure of its smooth, light progress over your paper might just make you forget all about other kinds of nibs.) With its piston filler, this big pen can carry a remarkable load of ink for extended writing sessions. Length: 53/4" (more size info here). Click the magnifying glass for a zoomed image of this pen.

M800-Series Pens

A little larger than life. Next in size to the M1000, the M800 series is still quite a handful. But, like all Souveräns, these pens really fit well into your hand. With smooth, reliable 18K two-tone nibs, they will serve you well for as long as you like. The M800 features the timeless look of the traditional Pelikan gold-plated furniture, while the M805 wears elegantly modern silver plating. Length: 57/16" (more size info here). Like the M1000, these pens have a piston filler featuring solid brass components. Click the magnifying glass for a zoomed image of this pen.

M700 Toledo

An authentic masterpiece you can use every day with pleasure and confidence. Fitted with a barrel Binde of vermeil on sterling silver, each Toledo is unique — individually hand engraved, signed, and numbered. The matte gold-plated furniture complements the barrel design without ostentation. The same size as an M2nn or M4nn, the M700 Toledo is an outstanding example of Old World craftsmanship at its finest as well as a thoroughly reliable piston-filling Pelikan Souverän pen. Length: 415/16" (more size info here). Click the magnifying glass for a zoomed image of this pen.

M640 Natural Wonders

The Souverän for the 21st Century is here! Pelikan’s new M640 series is longer and heavier than the earlier M600-series pens, with a new and curvier silhouette. The gently recurved cap profile flows into a new metal barrel with a more pronounced “keg” shape to snuggle more comfortably into today’s larger hands. The balance is remarkably good; these are serious writing pens as well as exciting lookers. But even though they look different, they’re still Pelikan Souveräns, complete with Pelikan’s ultra-reliable piston filler.

The newest M640 is the Polar Lights, featuring the green of the Aurora Borealis (or Australis, if you live at the Antipodes) against the deep blue of a clear night sky. The Polar Lights comes with rhodium-plated furniture and a matching fully-plated 18K nib like that in the M625. Length: 513/32" (more size info here). Click the magnifying glass for a zoomed image of this pen.

M600-Series Pens

A “standard” for the ages. At about the same length and girth as a standard Sheaffer’s Balance, the piston-filling M600 and its kin are the Souveräns most like the “standard” size of days gone by. They are perfect for people whose hands are neither large nor small. Their smooth, reliable 14K two-tone nibs are available in a range of sizes from EF (extra fine) to BB (double broad). With gold-plated furniture, the M600 is a traditional Pelikan. The M625 is in a class by itself, with a rich deep cobalt blue or stained-glass red transparent barrel and a solid sterling silver cap. Appointments are silver to match the cap, and the 18K nib (XF, F, M, or B only) is rhodium plated. Length: 51/4" (more size info here). Click the magnifying glass for a zoomed image of this pen.

M400-Series Pens

Remember your father’s Esterbrook? The M400 is just that size, the least bit smaller than an M600. But, like all Souveräns, it comes with a solid piston filler and your choice from Pelikan’s broad range of smooth, reliable 14K two-tone nibs. The colors of these pens mirror those of the M8xx series, with traditional Pelikan gold-plated furniture on the M400 and modern silver plating on the M405. The elegance of sterling silver shines in the M425 — and the M450 brings a new level of luxury to the series, with a gorgeous Honey Tortoise barrel and a vermeil cap (gold layered over solid sterling silver) engaved with a parallel-line pattern and complete with a framed incidia for engraving your name or initials. Appointments are vermeil or gold plated to match the cap, and the nib is 18K. (Nibs for M425 and M450 available in XF, F, M, or B only). Length: 415/16" (more size info here). M300-Series Pens

Pelikan’s bantamweight entry is the M300. It’s tiny, a miniature Souverän at only 43/8" in length (more size info here), but it is a true Souverän, with the same elegant gold-plated furniture, piston filler, interchangeable two-tone 14K nibs, and superb writing qualities that have made Souveräns so desirable and usable. For extra panache there is the brilliant M320 in a brilliant orange marmalade color that’s every bit as delicious in its own way. Click the magnifying glass for a zoomed image of this pen. M215 Pens

The M215 in all-black dress is the perfect inexpensive pen to complement your tux at that special white-tie event; with a blue barrel, it’s less formal but still a great pen with a businesslike heft. These elegant Tradition upgrades feature the same great piston filler as their Souverän cousins, hidden within rich metal barrels that give a greater heft (0.7 oz as opposed to 0.4 oz for the M200). To set off its silver-colored furniture, the M215 features incised platinum-plated grooves in the barrel together with an unplated polished steel nib, available in Fine, Medium, or Broad. But it can accept M200 nibs, so you can complement its sleek lines with any of my preground specialty nibs from our Pelikan specialty nib chart. Length: 415/16" (more size info here). M200 Pens

Build your own customized Pelikan! Shades of your grandfather’s Esterbrook! Choose your favorite pen color, then choose a nib. The M200 pens offered here are bodies only; they do not have nibs. (But they do, of course, include that reliable piston filling system that Pelikan introduced to the world in 1929.) To purchase a complete pen, follow these two easy steps:

  1. Choose a pen body from the selection below.

  2. Add a nib. You can choose a standard M200 or M250 nib from the chart below or an italic or other specialty nib from our specialty nib page.

Length: 415/16" (more size info here). Click the magnifying glass for a zoomed image of this pen.

Standard Nibs for Pelikan Pens

Because Pelikan pens have interchangeable nibs, some owners find it convenient to purchase extra nibs to fit their pens. If you have never tried installing or removing a nib, rest assured that you can do it. Check out our nib swapping instructions. We stock Fine, Medium, Broad, and Extra Broad nibs for most Souverän and Tradition pens. We treat extra-fine nibs as a specialty grind because Pelikan’s standard extra-fine nibs (labeled EF) do not meet my quality standards; they are inconsistent in flow, smoothness, and stroke width.

As with the pens we sell, unless otherwise requested at the time of sale, I tune each new nib at no extra charge before shipment. I install the nib in a pen body, fill the pen with Waterman Blue-Black ink, and write with it on paper from the same fountain pen friendly pads we sell, adjusting as necessary to bring it up to the RichardsPens.com “factory” standard for smoothness and flow. The result is an adjusted nib, not a customized one.

It is well known that Pelikan Tradition and Souverän pens have interchangeable nibs, and that some — but not all — models’ nibs can fit into other models. This chart lays out which nibs fit which pens.

Note

The fact that a given nib fits into a given pen should not be taken to imply that the aesthetics of the combination will be pleasing to you. For example, you can put an M215 nib into an M600, but the nib is slightly smaller than the “correct” nib, and the unplated stainless steel may not look attractive next to the M600’s gold furniture.
Sizes of Pelikan Souverän and Tradition Series Pens

Although most of these pens look generally alike, the Souverän and Tradition series offer a broad range of sizes. A small difference in size can make a huge difference in writing ease and comfort; time spent considering which is the right size for your hand will be time well spent. Here is an illustration of the pens (posted) on a calibrated grid, followed by a table listing pertinent size information numerically.

How Do They Compare to Our Other Brands?

You can compare the sizes of these pens against those of our other brands’ pens on our Compare Pens Side by Side page.

Notes:
  1. We include extra-fine nibs (XF) as a specialty grind because Pelikan’s standard extra-fine nibs (labeled EF) do not meet my quality standards; they are inconsistent in flow, smoothness, and stroke width. If you order an extra-fine nib for your Pelikan pen, I will regrind a standard fine nib to create a smooth, reliable extra-fine writing experience for you.

  2. This nib also fits vintage 400, 400N, and 400NN pens and the old-style (pre-1995) M600.

  3. This nib does not fit the old-style (pre-1995) M600; that pen is the same size as the M400 (1/4" shorter than the current M6xx models).

  4. For pens with barrel diameters significantly greater in the middle than at the ends (i.e., having a “barrel” or “keg” shape), barrel diameters are given as two slash-separated figures. The first figure is the diameter at the threads, and the second is the largest diameter.
